What is CBD?
What is CBD?
In short……Cannabidiol abbreviated as CBD. CBD is one of the many cannabinoid molecules found within hemp. Hemp is a strain of Cannabis known as Cannabis Sativa which produces high levels of CBD and trace levels of THC. Tetrahydrocannabinol abbreviated as THC is the compound within Cannabis most people are familiar with. THC is psychoactive and produces “the high”.
The science bit…The human body is trying to constantly achieve homeostasis. Homeostasis is the bodies self-regulating mechanism of maintaining stability whilst adjusting to conditions that are optimal for survival. Spread throughout the human body there is an Endocannabinoid Sytem (ECS) which is a network of receptors found within the nervous system, connective tissues, glands and organs. Endocannaninoids are naturally produced by cells within the body, (‘endo’ means ‘within’, as in within the body).
Endocannabinoids at work…Now I may not enjoy running, if I am not being chased why would I need to run!? However if you’re a long distance runner you may have experienced “runner’s high” which can be described as a feeling of euphoria which will reduce your feeling of pain, to kick in that last mile of the marathon. For years Endorphin's have wrongly claimed the pedestal for this feeling. Endorphin's cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier however; anandamide a lipid-soluble endocannabinoid can travel from the blood into the brain, where it can trigger a high.
CBD reacts with the body’s own cannabinoid system working like a lock and key. CBD has been shown to produce anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects. CBD is seen as a natural health remedy used by many people for management of illness and symptoms including: reducing pain, pain and symptoms associated with cancer, improving mood, soothing anxiety, aiding inflammatory arthritis, aiding sleep disorders, help with migraines, Fibromyalgia, Epilepsy, PTSD, Multiple Sclerosis.
